Viking Welding & Fabrication: The Berkeley Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Viking-compatible welded brackets, hinge rebuilds, and gate-frame repair for most Viking swing and slide operators, with typical installed welding and fabrication running $280-$620 depending on material gauge and whether the gate is steel or aluminum. Most Viking welding jobs in Berkeley are completed same day because we carry 11-gauge and 14-gauge steel stock, stainless hardware, and TIG-ready aluminum on the truck. Homeowners usually discover the problem when a gate arm pulls its mounting bracket away from a rotting jamb, or when a slide gate’s internal frame weld cracks and the gate starts sagging mid-travel.
Which Viking Models This Applies To
Viking welding and fabrication needs fall into two categories: the operator mounting hardware (brackets, posts, pedestals) and the gate structure itself (hinge points, frame welds, catch posts). Viking’s G-5, G-7, and G-10 swing operators use a 4-bolt pattern on a 6-inch by 6-inch mounting plate, but we’ve seen three different plate thicknesses across production years: 3/16-inch on pre-2018 units, 1/4-inch on 2018-2022, and a return to 3/16-inch with gusseting on 2023+ models. The bolt pattern stayed the same, so a custom-fabricated bracket from an earlier year will bolt to a newer operator, but the load distribution changes. Viking slide operators (L-3, L-5, XL series) mount on 4-inch square posts with a 1/2-inch base plate; if your post is rusted through at the concrete line, we fabricate a replacement post with a galvanized sleeve and re-weld the operator base.
We are an independent service provider, not affiliated with Viking Access Systems. For OEM bracketry, Viking part numbers start with VK- for operator hardware and GT- for gate accessories, but lead times run 2-3 weeks. We typically fabricate equivalent brackets from A36 structural steel or 6061-T6 aluminum, depending on the gate material, and match Viking’s hole patterns exactly. The aftermarket decision here is straightforward: OEM brackets are painted mild steel, while our fabricated equivalents are hot-dip galvanized or powder-coated at the same price point, which matters in Berkeley’s marine-influenced climate where salt air accelerates rust at exposed welds.
Signs Your Viking Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

- Gate arm mounting bracket is pulling away from the post or jamb. The weld between the bracket and the backing plate has cracked, or the wood behind the jamb has rotted, allowing the lag bolts to loosen. On Viking swing operators, this shows up as increasing “bounce” at the end of travel, and eventually the arm separates entirely.
- Slide gate drags or binds in mid-travel after running smoothly for years. The internal frame weld has cracked, usually at a vertical-to-horizontal joint where the gate flexes over uneven driveway settlement. Viking slide gates use a box-frame design; once a corner weld goes, the gate rack no longer tracks straight against the pinion.
- Hinge pins are egg-shaped or the gate has visible sag when closed. The weld bead at the hinge barrel has cracked, allowing the pin to wobble. On heavier Viking-equipped gates, this accelerates wear on the operator’s internal limit-switch cam because the gate no longer stops at a consistent position.
- Fresh rust streaks below any welded joint. This indicates a failed paint or galvanizing layer at the weld, which in Berkeley’s climate means moisture has reached bare metal. Caught early, we grind, re-weld, and re-coat; delayed, the section needs replacement.
- Operator works but the gate moves unevenly or “walks” off its track. The catch post or guide bracket has shifted because its base weld cracked or the concrete footing has spalled. We see this often on older Berkeley installations where the original footing was 12 inches deep and modern code calls for 24 inches in expansive clay soil.
Before
AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
| Service | Typical Range (Berkeley) | What’s Included |
|---|---|---|
| Single bracket fabrication and weld | $280-$380 | Material, cutting, welding, galvanizing or powder coat, reinstallation, operator re-leveling |
| Gate frame crack repair (slide gate) | $340-$520 | Frame disassembly, crack prep, re-weld, rack realignment, travel test |
| Hinge rebuild / pin replacement | $220-$340 | Pin extraction, barrel re-weld, new bushing, gate rehang and adjustment |
| Post replacement with operator remount | $480-$620 | Old post removal, new post fabrication, concrete footing, operator re-level, limit reset |
What drives the range: material gauge (11-gauge steel costs more than 14-gauge but resists denting), access (a bracket behind dense Berkeley hedging takes longer to reach), and whether the operator needs re-leveling after the weld. We write the price before we strike an arc, and that written price is what you pay. Under our Haven Standard Clause 1, you’ll have the scope and total in hand before work starts. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers all welding and fabrication: if a crack reopens at the same joint within a year, we repair it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here, and then there’s where DIY goes wrong. You can check: whether bolts are loose (tighten with a wrench, don’t over-torque), whether rust is surface-only or flaking to bare metal, and whether the gate moves freely by hand with the operator disconnected. What we don’t recommend: grinding or welding on a gate that’s connected to an energized operator, cutting into a loaded hinge without supporting the gate weight, or attempting to reweld a cracked frame while the gate hangs from its rack. Viking operators carry 24V DC control voltage, but the welding current can backfeed through ground paths and damage circuit boards we’ve seen it happen on a G-7 in the Elmwood neighborhood. If the weld involves anything that supports weight or carries current, call us at (510) 879-5471. We’ll price it in writing and usually complete it same day.
FAQs
In Berkeley’s climate, a properly galvanized structural weld on a residential gate should last 12-18 years before showing surface rust; we’ve seen original Viking brackets fail at 8 years when the galvanizing was thin or the gate was overloaded. Salt air from the Bay accelerates corrosion at exposed weld beads, which is why we specify hot-dip galvanizing or powder coat on every fabrication job. Call (510) 879-5471 and we’ll inspect the joint condition at no charge.
Most frame cracks are repairable if the surrounding metal isn’t thinned by rust; we cut back to solid metal, prep the joint, and re-weld with a reinforcing gusset. Full replacement only makes sense when multiple joints have failed or the gate has sagged enough that the rack geometry can’t be realigned. We document the crack with photos before cutting and show you the repair plan in writing under Clause 1.
A single bracket or hinge repair runs 90 minutes to 2 hours on site; a slide-gate frame crack with rack realignment takes 3-4 hours. We carry steel stock, stainless hardware, and a 220V TIG/stick rig on the truck, so we’re not waiting on material delivery. The price we write includes all labor; there is no hourly add-on.
We stock common Viking wear items (limit cams, control boards, gearboxes) and fabricate structural parts that would otherwise carry a 2-3 week OEM lead time. For operator-specific brackets, we match Viking’s bolt pattern from measurements on your unit; for gate hardware, we build to the gate’s actual dimensions rather than forcing a catalog part to fit. Every fabricated part is photographed before installation and logged in your job record under Clause 4.
Need a Viking gate weld checked or a bracket fabricated in Berkeley? Call (510) 879-5471. We’ll send a written scope and price before any work starts, and you’ll get a photo record of every weld and adjustment before we leave. Name what you found, name what it costs, name what you left behind.
