To identify what you need, check the operator nameplate for the series (CSW, SL, Miracle, or Q) and measure the gate material thickness with a magnet and caliper if you have one. The OEM Elite mounting hardware is 3/16-inch plate on residential arms, but many Berkeley gates installed in the 1990s and 2000s used lighter 1/8-inch material that fatigues faster. • The gate sags or binds at the end of its swing. This usually means the hinge weld has cracked or the post itself has shifted in its concrete footing. The operator keeps trying to push a frame that is no longer square, which burns out the motor over time.
• You hear metal creaking or popping when the gate starts moving. That sound is typically a fatigue crack propagating through a weld joint, often at the arm bracket or the diagonal frame brace. Left alone, it separates completely.

A homeowner can safely check whether the gate is square with a tape measure, compare diagonal corner-to-corner measurements, and look for visible cracks at the welds. What you should not do is attempt to weld a loaded gate frame yourself. The steel is under tension from the gate weight, and cutting or grinding without supporting the leaf can cause sudden collapse. Arc welding on a gate connected to an Elite operator also risks backfeeding voltage into the control board.
